Question 1

Do I need a visa to volunteer in Uganda?

Accepted Answer

Most nationalities require a visa to enter Uganda. For stays under three months, a tourist visa is sufficient. You can apply online in advance at the Uganda e-visa portal (visas.immigration.go.ug) or obtain a Visa on Arrival at Entebbe International Airport for USD $50. We recommend applying online at least 10 days before travel to avoid queues on arrival.

What documents do I need for my visa application?

Accepted Answer

You will need a scanned copy of your passport bio-data page, a recent passport-sized photo, and a valid Yellow Fever vaccination certificate. Your passport must have at least six months' validity from your arrival date and at least two blank pages for entry stamps.

Question 3

What if I plan to stay longer than three months?

Accepted Answer

Volunteers staying longer than three months should apply for a Class G1 Volunteer Work Permit before entering Uganda. Contact your nearest Ugandan embassy or consulate for the current application requirements, which typically include a filled entry permit form, passport copies, an NGO certificate, a criminal record report, a cover letter, and an appointment letter from Front Aid Foundation Uganda.

Question 4

Which vaccinations do I need before travelling to Uganda?

Accepted Answer

A Yellow Fever vaccination certificate is required for entry into Uganda. We also strongly recommend being up to date on routine vaccinations including MMR, diphtheria-tetanus-pertussis, chickenpox, and polio. Hepatitis A and typhoid vaccinations are recommended as you may be exposed to contaminated food or water. Consult your GP or a travel health clinic at least six to eight weeks before departure.

Question 5

Is malaria a risk in Uganda?

Accepted Answer

Yes, malaria is present in Uganda. We recommend taking antimalarial medication prescribed by your doctor, using insect repellent containing DEET, wearing long sleeves and trousers in the evenings, and sleeping under a mosquito net. These precautions significantly reduce your risk.

Should I get travel insurance?

Accepted Answer

Yes — travel insurance is essential and required for all Front Aid volunteers. Your policy should cover medical treatment, emergency evacuation, trip cancellation, and personal belongings. Ensure your insurer is aware you are volunteering abroad, as some standard travel policies exclude voluntary work.

Is the tap water safe to drink?

Accepted Answer

Tap water in Kampala and Buwambo is not reliably safe to drink. We recommend drinking bottled or filtered water throughout your stay. Avoid ice in drinks and be cautious with raw salads or unpeeled fruit from street vendors.

Question 8

Which airport do I fly into?

Accepted Answer

Entebbe International Airport (EBB) is Uganda's main international airport, located approximately 40 km from Kampala. Most international flights connect through Nairobi (Kenya), Addis Ababa (Ethiopia), Dubai, or Amsterdam. From Entebbe, you can take a taxi or pre-arranged transfer to Kampala and then onward to Buwambo or Bwaise.

How do I get from the airport to the volunteer accommodation?

The Front Aid team can arrange an airport pickup for you. Please let us know your arrival details when your application is confirmed. Taxis and ride-hailing apps such as Bolt and SafeBoda are also widely available at Entebbe Airport.

Question 10

How long does the journey from Entebbe to Buwambo take?

Accepted Answer

The journey from Entebbe Airport to Buwambo Village takes approximately one to two hours depending on traffic. Kampala traffic can be heavy during peak hours, so plan accordingly if arriving in the afternoon.

Question 11

What does the US$175 weekly contribution cover?

Accepted Answer

The US$175 per week contribution covers your accommodation at Kalule Bwaise Children Shelter or Meaford Nursery and Primary School, plus three meals a day — breakfast, lunch, and dinner — shared with the children at the shelter. It does not cover flights, travel insurance, visa fees, personal spending, or excursions.

How much spending money should I bring?

Accepted Answer

A reasonable personal budget for Uganda is between USD $20 and $40 per day, depending on your lifestyle and activities. This covers local transport, sim cards, personal items, souvenirs, and any optional excursions. Ugandan shillings (UGX) are the local currency; US dollars are widely accepted in Kampala.

Question 13

Can I access cash in Uganda?

Accepted Answer

ATMs are available in Kampala and accept Visa and Mastercard. We recommend carrying some US dollars in cash as a backup. Be cautious with ATMs and inspect them before use, as card skimming does occur. Inform your bank before travelling to avoid your card being blocked.

What language is spoken in Uganda?

Accepted Answer

English is an official language of Uganda and is widely spoken, so you will be able to communicate easily throughout your placement. Luganda is the most widely spoken local language in Kampala and the surrounding area. Learning a few basic Luganda greetings — such as 'Oli otya?' (How are you?) — is warmly appreciated by the community.

What is the culture like in Buwambo and Bwaise?

Accepted Answer

Uganda is known for the warmth and hospitality of its people. The communities we work with are predominantly Christian, with a strong sense of family, community, and shared responsibility. Dress modestly, especially when visiting homes, schools, or places of worship. Greet people respectfully and ask before taking photographs.

What should I wear as a volunteer?

Accepted Answer

Modest, practical clothing is recommended. Avoid very short shorts or revealing tops, particularly when working with children or visiting community homes. Light, breathable fabrics are best for Uganda's warm climate. Bring a light rain jacket for the rainy season (March–May and October–November).

What is the food like?

Accepted Answer

Ugandan food is hearty and flavourful. Common dishes include matoke (steamed plantain), posho (maize porridge), rice, beans, groundnut stew, and roasted chicken. Meals are shared with the children at Kalule Bwaise Children Shelter, which is a meaningful part of the volunteer experience. If you have dietary requirements, please let us know in your application.

Is Uganda safe for international volunteers?

Most visits to Uganda are trouble-free. The communities we work in are welcoming and safe for volunteers. As with any international travel, we recommend using common sense: avoid displaying expensive items, be aware of your surroundings, and follow the guidance of the Front Aid team. The team is available to support you throughout your placement.

Question 19

What support will I receive during my placement?

Accepted Answer

The Front Aid team will be with you throughout your stay. You will receive an orientation on arrival, daily programme support, and a local contact you can reach at any time. We are a small, community-based organisation, which means you will always have direct access to the people leading the work.

Question 20

What are the safeguarding requirements for working with children?

Accepted Answer

All volunteers working with children at Kalule Bwaise Children Shelter are required to read and sign our safeguarding policy before their placement begins. We take child protection seriously. Volunteers must not photograph children without permission, must not be alone with a child unsupervised, and must report any concerns immediately to the Front Aid team. Question 21

What should I pack for my volunteer placement?

Accepted Answer

Essentials include lightweight, modest clothing, sturdy walking shoes or boots, sandals, a light rain jacket, sunscreen, insect repellent (DEET-based), a reusable water bottle, a torch or headlamp, a basic first-aid kit, any prescription medication, and a padlock for your luggage. A small day bag is useful for community visits.

Should I bring gifts or donations?

We welcome donations of school supplies, books, art materials, and hygiene items for the children at Kalule Bwaise Children Shelter. Please contact us before your trip so we can advise on the most useful items. Avoid bringing large quantities of sweets or toys distributed directly to children, as this can create unhealthy dynamics.

Is there Wi-Fi and phone signal at the accommodation?

Accepted Answer

Mobile phone signal is generally available in Buwambo and Bwaise. We recommend purchasing a local Ugandan SIM card on arrival for affordable data and calls. Wi-Fi availability at the accommodation may be limited; please ask the team about current connectivity when your placement is confirmed.
